The surrounding area has a multitude of Cathar Castles steeped in history and well worth a visit. Puivert castle survived the revolution and was/is still in private ownership.

Other castles well worth visiting are:

Montsegur, Lastours, Puilerens, Querebus all of which are a short drive out, why not take a picnic.

The toques and clocher wine festival  http://www.toquesetclochers2017.fr/ is held every year in late March/early April in a villgae near Limoux.  The location changes each year and the proceeds go to renovating a church in a particular villgae.  There is a parade with each village that has held the festival being represented.  The village open up many barns and garages end even gardens as well as the public buildings to host wine stalls, food outlets and artist galleries.  Not one to be missed.

A similar fete is the Bandas held in May in Montreal with many marching and brass bands.

You cant be in the south of France and not think of wine tasting. Our favourites are:

Domaine le Fort, Montreal  www.domainelefort.com

Chateau Guilhem, Malvies www.chateauguilhem.com

Chateau la Grave, Badens  www.chateau-la-grave.net

Chateau Jouclary,  Conques-sur-Orbiel   www.chateau-jouclary.com

Domaine Parazols, Bagnoles  www.domaine-parazols.com

If you do not have time to visit the producers you may still be able to find the wine as many restaurants support local producers.

There are many local markets, each with its own character, this is in Bram, every Wednesday morning.

Other markets are:

Mirepoix, every Monday morning

Esperaza, every Sunday morning

Carcassonne, Tuesday, Friday and Saturday mornings

Driving around the countryside reveals many interesting sites not just historic monuments. Many villages in the area are called Circulade Villages as they were built in  circle surrounding the castle for protection. In later years the castles were demolished and replaced by churches. In some cases the two simply merged giving rise to what looks like a fortified church.
